What is Finasteride?

Finasteride is a generic medication used in the treatment of hair loss in men. Hair loss is a very common condition that can affect men from as early as their 20s, getting progressively worse as they age. Initially the hair on the scalp starts to thin, leading to a receding hairline and ultimately balding from the crown of the head. Most men will suffer from hair loss to some degree in their lives.

Finasteride is the active ingredient in the medication of the same name. It is designed to reduce or slow down the process of hair loss.

Propecia and Finasteride

Propecia is a brand name equivalent of Finasteride. Both contain the same active ingredient, Finasteride and both work in the same way to combat hair loss. Finasteride, being a generic, is significantly less expensive than the branded Propecia.

Generic medication is normally available with the same action and the same ingredients. The generic equivalent is often a lot less expensive than the brand name equivalent.

Alopecia

Male pattern baldness or Alopecia is a hair loss condition common to men.  It is the result of hair follicles becoming smaller as men age. Hair naturally grows for about 3 years before it sheds. Ordinarily these hairs are replaced from each follicle but as the follicles become smaller the individual strands become thinner. Eventually the follicle becomes so small that the hair can no longer grow at all and bald spots appear and grow.

The hair follicle change occurs due to a reduction in the hormone Dihydrotestosterone. If not addressed the result could become permanent and nothing more can be done to encourage hair growth. If treated in time it can dramatically slow this process down.

How Does Finasteride Work?

Finasteride works by slowing production of an enzyme in the body known as 5-alpha-reductase. By inhibiting this enzyme, it lowers its effect of turning testosterone into dihydrotesttosterone. By lowering levels of dihydrotesttosterone being produced in the body, hair follicle reduction and hair loss will be significantly slowed.

How soon will you see results?

Generally results of regular use of Finasteride will be noted after a few months but it will take up to a year for the full results and effect to be noticeable. It is an on-going process and it is important that regular application is continued in order to get good results.

If there is no significant improvement after a year of regular use it is advisable to discontinue the treatment and consult a doctor for advice.
