What is Sumatripan?

Sumatripan Generic is a drug that is used to treat migraine. The generic counterpart of Imigran, it also has sumatripan succinate as an active component. It belongs to the triptans medication class, meaning it is not a pain reliever but instead reverses changes in the brain that cause migraines. Instead of masking the symptoms, it fixes them at the source.

What is the difference between Imigran and Sumatripan?

They are both incredibly similar and contain the same components. The main difference is the price: since Sumatripan Generic is a generic version of Imigran, it is considerably cheaper.

How does Sumatriptan Work?

By reversing the enlargement of blood vessels in the brain, sumatripan succinate can cause the blood vessels to contract by using serotonin. Serotonin are receptors in the brain and this drug can energise them in a manner that allows the blood vessels to contract. Since one of the main causes of migraines is believed to be caused by the expansion of the blood vessels, causing them to contract eliminates the cause of the migraine, and in turn, the pain and other symptoms of migraine.

When should I take Sumatriptan?

If normal migraine medication is no benefit to you but you don’t experience migraines any more often than ten times per month, Sumatripan should be considered. Ideally, it should be taken as you feel the migraine coming on in order to prevent it, rather than leaving it until the migraine is at its worst and attempting to cure it.

How do I take Sumatriptan?

It is not required that you eat before taking Sumatripan but you should take it before the migraine fully kicks in. You can take a second dosage at a minimum of two hours later if the symptoms are still bothering you. However, if your first dosage did not make any difference whatsoever, it is not recommended that you should continue taking it.

Will I experience any side effects when I take Sumatriptan?

Like any drug, there are side effects associated with Sumatripan. These vary from person to person, but some of the more common side effects include nausea, vomiting, tiredness and drowsiness. It is very rare to be bothered by side effects however: only ten percent of people who take Sumatripan report experiencing negative side effects. However, if you have concerns, you should consult with a doctor or pharmacist before taking the drug.

What is an Overuse headache and what should I do?

An overuse headache refers to a headache you get from overconsumption of migraine medication. These rebound headaches may occur if you require more than ten doses of Sumatripan in a one month period. If you need to take this much of the drug, you should consult your doctor as they might be able to prescribe you a preventative drug that would help ease rebound headaches.
