What is Neurontin?
Neurontin is an anticonvulsant. Also marketed under the name Gabapentin, it was developed solely for the treatment of epilepsy. However recently studies have shown that it is beneficial in the treatment of fibromyalgia or chronic neuropathic pain caused by post-herpetic neuralgia.
This is also known as the pain you get after shingles or with diabetic neuropathy. Neurontin is now also used in pain relief for migraines.
Neurontin functions through the binding of its active ingredients to the calcium channels in the nerve cells in the spinal cord and brain. This allows a release of multiple neurotransmitters and these conduct messages through the nerve cells.
Neurontin stops glutamate being released specifically. This is a neurotransmitter which is mostly used to send pain signals to the brain and nervous system. By hindering its release, the amount of pain the user feels is diminished and they experience relief.
